I was privileged to attend the USU showing of this documentary. I had heard a lot about it, most of it negative so I was expecting a very angry anti-Mormon film. That was not at tall the film I watched. This was a good piece of investigative journalism, with the heartbreaking story of same sex couples who saw their dreams of marriage torn away from them.
I am a convert to the LDS church, I was baptized in 2004 so for me this was a tough subject. I have always felt that discrimination against same sex couples was wrong, and two years after being welcomed into the church I was being encouraged to financially and emotionally support a campaign that felt wrong.
I was horrified to learn that while the LDS church was claiming financial hardship thousands of dollars was going to this "secret" project. I remember attending "Know your religion" this was a fantastic program that brought members of area seventies to speak at stake centers. I was lucky to attend two of these in Eureka CA. The church canceled this program, claiming that their was low attendance and it was to expensive to run. Less than two years later they would pour money into ending civil marriage rights for same sex couples.
That is what I walked away with after this film, the sick feeling that the church would end a program that taught about faith and spiritual growth so that they could get involved in a political matter that was none of their damn business.
I am glad that I watched the movie, it was very painful but the truth often is. I will not recommend it to others, that would be weird, like saying "Hey friend, go and feel sad and pissed off" I will say that if you are curious about it watch it. Don't let anyone tell you what it's like, view it and make up your own mind.
